TEAK Office Redesign
How do you create more space without any construction?
Role
Designer
Solution
Space Utilization
Interior Design
TEAK Fellowship is an educational nonprofit that helps underrepresented kids get accepted into top colleges. With a growing class and staff, they needed to adapt to needs for space and accommodations. I helped them to do so without major construction requirements by conducting user journeys and creating floor plans.
Problem
A nonprofit office seeks to adapt their office to a growing class and staff size on a budget.
Challenge
The office has a limited budget but has to accommodate the following needs:
Highest priority needs
Workstations for 23 staff members, from 20
A private space for a counselor
Standing room for 60 students, from 30 before
Secondary needs
Alleviating noise transmission
Repositioning CEO
Solution
We run a space utilization exercise, investigating different ways to maximize the uses of the space while minimizing architectural changes.
We decide to add phone booths - spaces that people can plug into for solo work and calls. This frees up space for more employee workstations and adds flexibility.
Adding meeting rooms helps to partition spaces for conversation, thus removing distractions and noise from public work spaces. It also provides privacy for the counselor meetings.
Moving the CEO office deeper into the office takes responsiblity off of them to serve as reception.
